Spred Down and Conor awareness month

SPRED Down and Conor continues to expand and grow in the Down and Conor Diocese and to promote its core objective that all people with learning difficulties take their rightful place in parish communities.

‘September is traditionally our recruitment month’ said Lena Meehan ( Director) ‘In September our parish based groups attend and take part in a weekend mass in order to show parishes how their SPRED group integrates into parish life and to invite others within the parish to join us. Being a member of SPRED is a totally enriching experience for all our members and I would like to invite anyone who has an interest to join us. We are a charity that cares about and celebrates the friendships that our members form. We celebrate this each year at our annual day of celebration which was held in St Mary’s University College Belfast this year. The annual day of celebration is just that a huge get together and party which is rapidly becoming one of our most anticipated events.’

This year also saw seventeen members of SPRED made the journey to Dublin to attend the Eucharistic congress where Director Lena Meehan held a very successful and well attended workshop on 16th June. She said afterwards that the ‘uniqueness of SPRED Down and Conor was recognised because of the dedication of its members and Management Committee to growing SPRED in the Down and Conor Diocese and that it was most encouraging that other Irish diocesan representatives approached her to ask for help and advice in setting up SPRED groups in their dioceses.’ She added that ‘ one of SPRED Down and Conor ‘s aims is to have a SPRED group in each parish – the workshop I held could well mean that that objective may extend to all of Ireland !’

SPRED is a growing and thriving charity which is always on the look out for new members both able bodied and learning disabled to join existing groups or set up new groups. Do you think you could help us grow, you don’t need any special skills just an open heart !
