‘Sae hae bok mani badeuseyo’...as they say in Ballycastle’s Gaelscoil!
TUESDAY 10th of February saw the children and staff at Gaelscoil an Chaistil celebrate and learn about the Korean New Year.
The children learned about the colourful traditional clothing worn by Koreans called Hanbok and the food they normally eat called Duk Gook. They
learned and practised the traditionally observed activity called Sebae, that is wishing family members a happy new year (Sae hae bok
mani badeuseyo!) and performing traditional bows.
“The Korean New Year is extra special for the children and staff at Gaelscoil an Chaistil as one of our pupils was born in South Korea,” explained principal Brídín Ní Dhonnghaile.
“His mother Tiffany came to the school to give a presentation about Seollal, the Korean New Year, to all the pupils and to share personal photographs showing some of the traditional clothing worn at this special time of year.
“This year is the Year of the Snake, and all the children enjoyed making paper snakes to celebrate Seollal with their school friend. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed learning about Seollal and the craft activities that followed, and I would like to thank Tiffany for taking the time to give the presentation.”
