Rasharkin remembers Gerard Casey

HUNDREDS of republicans gathered in Rasharkin recently to commemorate local IRA volunteer Gerard Casey. Married with a young family Gerard was shot by the UVF in 1989.

His case is one of a number of collusion cases that remain unresolved in the North Antrim area. Sinn Fin have again called for a full and independent investigation into his death.

The guest speaker at the Commemoration was republican ex-POW Jim McVeigh. He spoke of how the Casey family, like many others, has made a huge contribution and sacrifice for the republican cause and that the republican community in areas like Rasharkin will never forget that.

After the commemoration local MLA Daith McKay urged people to “take down the Easter Proclamation from the wall and read it.”

Mr McKay described the document as “truly radical and as relevant today as it was in 1916”:

"This week marks the 91st anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. It is an important time for Irish republicans. It is a time for remembering our friends and colleagues who have given their lives in pursuit of our republican ideals and goals. It is a time for reflecting on these ideals.

"Republicans are rightly proud of our heritage and our struggle and will not allow it to be tarnished or demonised in any way.”
