Police chief hails success of Irish Open
FOLLOWING the Irish Open Golf Tournament, PSNI H District Commander, Chief Superintendent Chris Noble, said: “The success of the Irish Open is very much down to the many month’s of detailed preparation, involving a whole range of partners, and many long hours during the event week. Northern Ireland has proven beyond any doubt that it can deliver a world class event.
“Across the six spectator days well over 130,000 people came through the gates of Royal Portrush and the professional and personal approach of the police officers at the event was highly commended by those attending.
“Police played a low key but significant role in ensuring the safety of spectators throughout the event week and supported the European Tour and Royal Portrush Golf Club in their responsibilities.
“Police made two arrests in connection with the event for possession of alleged counterfeit tickets but otherwise praised those attending for their impeccable behaviour.
“The success of the park and ride arrangements facilitated minimal traffic disruption, however, we do appreciate the support of local residents who have seen a huge increase in pedestrian traffic. The effective flow of traffic was a key priority for the police service and, in partnership with DRD and Translink, there is now a tried and tested plan in place to manage large volumes of traffic for events of this type.
“This was another successful event for the North Coast area following on from the North West 200 and the Olympic Torch Run and concert. I want to pay tribute to my officers and staff who put in long and demanding hours to ensure this was the most successful core golf tournament the European Tour has ever hosted.”
