McKay welcomes Rasharkin work

NORTH Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed planned road improvements to the Duneany Road in Rasharkin.

Mr McKay met with Roads Service in early January to discuss the danger that parts of the road pose during winter months.

“I have been corresponding with Roads Service for a number of years now requesting that this road be added to the gritting schedule, both the road in its entirety and the road from the crossroads in the village out to the dangerous bend just outside the 30mph zone,” said Mr McKay.

“A number of traffic counts have been done at my request but unfortunately it has yet to meet the criteria that is set. I do think that criteria does need to be reviewed, especially for cases like this where the route is clearly a main linkage to the A26 that is widely used.

“I met with Roads Service members here in early January to discuss the bad bend just before vehicles enter the village and requested a number of measures be introduced. They did agree to some of these and have now confirmed to me in writing that a double bend warning sign will be erected on the approach to the bends from the Glarryford direction.

“Also a SLOW road marking will be painted on the same approach to the bends and the edge of carriageway road markings will be painted around the bends to give better visual warning to motorists of the road layout.

“These are to be welcomed but I still think more needs to be done and we will continue to campaign to have this route added to the gritting schedule.”
