‘Liitle book of big scams’ to help beat fraudsters

IN recent weeks, the Ballymoney and Moyle Times has carried a number of stories about local people falling foul of fraud.

Now, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has produced a new anti-fraud advice booklet designed to help the community protect themselves from fraudsters.

“The Little Book of Big Scams” has been developed by the PSNI Organised Crime Branch and Crime Prevention Branch in an effort to educate the public about known methods of fraud currently used by criminals.

Head of Crime Prevention for the PSNI, Inspector Davy Connery, said the booklet has been produced with Christmas in mind: “The threat of fraud, both online and offline against the public is a constant focus for police and with Christmas rapidly approaching this is a timely reminder for vigilance.

“We need to ensure that the public is constantly vigilant against the very real risk of fraud, whether that is from doorstep callers, telephone, mail or online means. Education is our best weapon in helping to prevent people from becoming victims,” said Inspector Connery.

“This booklet is a resource far beyond a general leaflet-type handout and provides a wealth of information. It is also designed to help vulnerable people, for example older persons or those with mental or physical challenges,” he said.

“The Little Book of Big Scams is an exceptional crime prevention tool written in an easy to understand format with helpful graphics and useful links to other resources and will be made available to the public through PSNI Crime Prevention Officers.

“I would thoroughly recommend members of the public to get themselves a copy. It will also be downloadable from the PSNI public website www.psni.police.uk,” said the police officer.
