Dervock direction signs cleaned up
A CLEAN-UP of ‘Ballycastle’ directional signs in Dervock has been welcomed.
For a number of years the name has been blacked out on road signs in the village.
The situation has often drawn comment from councillors in Ballycastle.
Earlier this year a process was initiated to get the signs cleaned ahead of big events in the village like the Olympic Torch relay and the Kennedy Kane McArthur centenary events and now the signs have been spruced up.
Steven Phillips, Vice-Chairman Dervock & District Community Association, told the Times: “There has been a fantastic clean up all over Dervock. The road signs have been replaced and the village looks very pretty - somewhere were visitors coming through the North Antrim Coast can stop and relax. “The village cafe (Mill Tea Rooms) has attracted a number of visitors even a crowd of bikers stopped by one Sunday on a tour and tucked into a few Ulster Frys. The two pubs have seen there share of visitors and all in all the village has come to life.
“The recent K.K. McArthur events and the Festival of running has given Dervock a bit of fame, and a big thanks to Bryan Edgar and the Springwell Runners for a tremendous amount of hard work and organisation.
“Thanks also to Roads Service for all their hard work and thanks to Ballymoney Borough Council for their contribution to the clean up and last but not lest the Community Association deserve a bit of credit as well,” said Mr Phillips.
Ballycastle SDLP councillor Dónal Cunningham welcomed the clean-up.
He said his party had previously contacted Roads Service about the issue and he welcomed the positive input from community leaders in Dervock.
Cllr Cunningham said the “emotional damage” caused by the targeting of the name Ballycastle on street signs highlighted the need for respect between neighbouring communities.
* Meanwhile, there has been a report that a directional sign at Garryduff had spray paint put over the name of ‘Dunloy’.
