Call for ‘renewable energy summit’

Ballycastle SDLP councillor Dónal Cunningham has called for Moyle to host a ‘Renewable Energy summit’ to bring together decision and policy-makers and leaders from the Renewable Energy sector.

He said: “Moyle would provide an ideal location for the Summit. The area has huge potential to generate and develop renewable energy as well as green jobs.

“The potential of our natural resources is huge and the motive for harnessing it is clear – both environmentally and economically. However, the Assembly needs to show more ambition and really take the lead by providing new infrastructure necessary to improve the security and diversity of energy supply. We need to see greater support for major energy projects which contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.

“An Energy Summit would bring together policy-makers and sector leaders to explore new possibilities for generating clean, renewable energy as well as progressing existing proposed projects such as the tidal energy project off Fair Head.

“Moyle is well placed in the energy generation sector in terms of resources, people and skills. We have an abundance of natural resources whose potential, if harnessed properly, could protect the environment and help create a green and sustainable economy.”
