Branching out with a ‘berry’ good scheme in Armoy!
A SCHEME involving the planting of fruit plants and the subsequent making of jam and tarts is being set up to help foster cross-community links in Armoy.
Moyle Council has agreed to a Good Relations Grant of £250 for Armoy Community Association to set up a scheme called ‘Blossom Where You Are Planted’.
A Moyle Council report stated: ‘Armoy Community Association’s project will encourage young people from the two main traditions within Armoy to work together in the planting of native varieties of fruit bushes and plants within agreed locations in the village.
‘The project provides an opportunity for the young people to work together in the planting of the shrubs, whilst learning and sending the message ‘we live where we are; are what we are and as individuals - like the fruit bushes we plant - we (the young people) need looking after and collectively it is easier to do it with the help of others’.’
The report continued: ‘The young people will nurture the plants as they grow and when the plants bear fruit, the members of Armoy Over-55s Club will show the young people how to make jams and tarts, etc, giving the young and senior members of the community the opportunity to work together.
‘The project hopes to show that in a mixed community good things can happen when young people from both traditions find common ground. It also will show that through collaboration any community can work together to ‘make your place and mine a better place’,’ said the report.
The Council was told the £250 will be used to buy 30 gooseberry bushes; 40 currant bushes in black red and white varieties; 20 rhubarb plants and five blueberry bushes.
