Bogus callers alert over rates refunds
Glens Sinn Fein Councillor Colum Thompson has warned people to be on their guard after several incidents of bogus callers trying to obtain bank details from householders on the pretext that they were due a refund on their rates.
The incidents happened in Belfast and Lisburn in recent days.
Councillor Thompson stressed that people should never give their bank details to anyone who calls at their door or contacts them about refunds. Councillor Thompson said: “At times Land and Property Service may contact ratepayers either by phone or in person to seek further information but never to collect bank details. When they call you by phone they will always confirm security details in relation to your account and if they need to call at your door they will always carry identification including their name and photograph and they will not mind waiting if you want to phone Land and Property Service to confirm that they are who they say they are.”
