Ballintoy has ‘one of safest roads’

BALLINTOY Main Street is officially one of the safest roads in Northern Ireland, it has emerged.

Roads Service has revealed that although hundreds of vehicles pass through the tourist hotspot each day their records show that in the five years up to April 2012, there were no recorded traffic injury collisions and the average speed, in the summer at least, was only 27mph.

Armed with the figures, Roads Service have now rejected calls for traffic calming measures in Ballintoy.

In a letter to Moyle Council and also Ulster Unionist councillor Joan Baird, Roads Service said: ‘Roads Service receives many requests for traffic calming measures. These requests are assessed using a number of criteria, which include the reported injury collision history for the previous three years; the speed, volume and type of traffic; and the characteristics of the site, which includes the presence of schools, shops, etc.

‘Consequently the assessment procedure is used to establish priorities and ensure available resources are targeted appropriately. Of these we give the highest priority to safety because we believe it is only right to treat sites with a collision history before those with a reasonably good safety record.

‘The assessment of Ballintoy demonstrated that it would not be highly placed compared to many others within the traffic calming programme. The summer traffic volumes on Main Street comprised of an average of 2,500 vehicles per day and had a mean speed of 27mph.

‘The collision records indicate that there had been no recorded traffic injury collisions within the last 5 years of Roads Service records which run to April 2012; therefore we have no plans to introduce traffic calming measures at this time,’ said the letter from Traffic Engineer Kevin McMullan.
