Armoy launches 'Ultimate Road Racers' Project

ARMOY Community Association have undertaken an exciting and innovative new project to tell the story of 'The Armoy Armada' - a group of exceptional young motorcycle road racers of world-renowned.

The project, a multimedia tourist information facility based on the local motorcycle history, is part-financed by the European Union through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC).

Local award winning digital media company Awakin, working on behalf of Armoy Community Association, have engaged the local community in an interpretation of Armoy village and the story of the Armoy Armada, by developing a digital media trail which you can enjoy by hiring a device in armoy or by downloading to your ipod, iphone or other device for free (visit www.armoyarmada.com)

The project content was brought about by a number of sessions that took the form of workshops, seminars, focus groups, oral history evenings and familiarisation visits. These sessions were strong resources to gather information and help build relationships within the Armoy Community and enabling locals to become more aware of their past heritage.

John Ward, of Armoy Community Association explained: "Our aim, as always, is to work together as a community to promote our village for visitors to come and enjoy.

"This project will revolutionise the tourist experience locally, especially in the presentation and interpretation of Armoy. I believe the Armoy Armada Project has shown that Awakin's 'involved tourism' model can work and I am so proud to have been involved and to have assisted the road racing family in articulating their unique and inspiring story."

Speaking at the launch RDC Board member Leslie Craig paid tribute to the group commenting: "The Armoy group have worked hard to regenerate the rural locality here. RDC is very proud to have been involved in this project which seeks to capitalise on the local identity culture and heritage of the area".

The Armoy Armada Trail will officially launch last Monday. Devices can be hired from the Riverside Service Station in the village or downloaded to your own device from www.armoyarmada.com
