£100,000 bill for public art scheme

A PUBLIC art scheme at Ballycastle Seafront and Rathlin Harbour will cost £100,000 if it goes ahead, it has emerged.

A Moyle Council report said: 'Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust (CCGHT) are developing a project called the 'Interpretation Project for the Causeway Coastal Route (Tourism Development Scheme – Programme for Government)'.

'The CCGHT are making a funding application to the Northern Ireland Tourist Board for this project. The area covered is the North coast from Larne to Magilligan. In the Moyle area their recommendations include commissioning two public art works at Ballycastle seafront and at Rathlin Harbour, both of which are owned by Moyle District Council.

'As these two sites are Council owned, The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust would like Moyle District Council to become involved in commissioning the public art works for these sites.

'The Arts Officer has given a draft budget to the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust for the proposed artworks for the NITB (Tourist Board) application. If the CCGHT funding application to NITB is successful, the contribution in match-funding from Moyle District Council would be 25000, which would be 25% of the totals costs.

'This amount has already been included in the Tourism Development Capital Works budget annual estimates.

'In addition, Moyle District Council would apply for funding through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's (ACNI) Public Art fund for a further 25% as match funding.

'If the application to ACNI is successful, the CCGHT would include this funding as match-funding towards the commissioning of the two public art works at the above sites. The next round of applications for ACNI The Public Art fund opens in March 2009,' said the Council report.
