A Rathlin Island bus operator was last week fined a total of £1,000 at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay £28 court costs and a £15 offender levy.

Bertie Currie of Ballingard Cottages, Rathin Island, Ballycastle, was fined £500 for using two unlicensed buses to transport passengers for hire and reward from Rathin Harbour to the Island’s bird sanctuary on the 19th July 2013. He was also fined a further £500 for failing to hold a Road Service Licence.

On 19th July 2013, Enforcement Officers from the Driver & Vehicle Agency carried out spot checks on buses operating passenger services on Rathlin Island when they encountered the unlicensed vehicles.

Further checks revealed that these vehicles, which bore the livery ‘Bert’s Puffin Bus’, did not have a Public Service Vehicle Licence nor a Road Service Licence in force.
