Newington 3 Glenavon Thirds 2

GLENAVON Thirds made the early running in this encounter but couldn’t capitalize on their superiority and allowed a very dogged Newington side back into the game unscathed.

Indeed Newington drew first blood when converting from a right wing cross. Glenavon almost equalized before the break when Ryan Corrigan hit a stunning strike which just failed to hit the target.

Newington doubled their lead in the opening minutes of the second period in a replica of their first. This seemed to waken the Lurgan lads and the deficit was halved when good work from Jamie Diamond provided Robbie McDaid who fired home.

Newington broke immediately and restored their two goal cushion. In a see saw period Glenavon went on the attack and Stuart Wells went on a weaving run which saw his curling effort go agonizingly wide. With 15 minutes to go the game hung in the balance again when Diamond and Rhys Marshall combined to put Andrew Mitchell through and the striker made no mistake. The game now was end to end as Glenavon pushed for an equalizer while Newington hit on the counter attack.

Mitchell went close when firing over and Diamond’s cross cum shot just evaded the back post. In the end Newington held on and Glenavon go into their game this Saturday at 2pm at the Gordon Playing Fields against Ballymena United with the knowledge that individual errors need to be eradicated if progress is to be made.
