A FORMER Dalriada pupil could be representing Ireland in this year's Eurovision Song Contest!
Laura-Jayne Hunter, who lives in Coleraine, is one of five finalists to compete in Irelands song for Europe competition which will be broadcast this Friday (February 20), on RTE One's Late, Late Show.
Aged 22, Laura-Jayne has been writing and performing music since the age of 15 and studied music degree at Leeds University.
She had just finished her degree and was working with producer Michael Wolff when he was approached by songwriter Derry O'Donovan, who is originally from Cork, with a song he wanted to put forward for the Irish entry for Eurovision. Derry was looking for a singer and Michael suggested Laura.
After reviewing her work Derry knew he had found the perfect vocalist for his song and that's how it all started.
Laura is delighted to have reached the finals and hopes that local people will tune in to the Late Late Show this Friday at 9.30pm and give her their vote.
In the last few weeks Laura-Jayne has been travelling between Leeds, Dublin and Germany recording her song and video which will be aired for the first time this Friday night on the Late Late Show.
Laura-Jayne took time out of her busy to talk to the Times: "Music, singing and performing is what I love most and what I want to do with my life. I write a lot of my own material and hope to do well with that in the coming year.
"The song I will be singing for Eurovision begins in Gaelic and then breaks into an upbeat pop dance song, it is called 'Out of Control' and is completely different from what I would normally sing, but it's a challenge and I enjoy doing it.
"I'm so excited that I've managed to get this far and would be greatly honoured to represent Ireland in the contest. My inspiration to start singing and writing happened when I lived at home in Coleraine and went to a school in Ballymoney, I think Ireland is such a musical place and I was constantly surrounded by talented people and friends who played instruments and sang.
"I will be performing live with the other finalists this coming Friday, so please tune in and support by calling in to vote."
Laura-Jayne is a wonderfully talented young woman with a bright future ahead of her.
