Mr Robin Swann MLA,the Ulster Unionist Party’s Westminster candidate for North Antrim, has called on the entire constituency to adopt the phrase “health is your wealth and check for the signs of cancer”.
Assemblyman Swann, who is UUP Chief Whip and Chairman of the Stormont Employment and Learning Committee, issued his appeal as he supported the Public Health Agency’s ‘Be Cancer Aware’ campaign.
Mr Swann said the aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and encourage anyone who experiences any of them to contact their GP.
He added: “Nearly half of us, 49%, would be put off going to the doctor if we had a symptom, due to being worried about what they might find, but the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the easier it can be to treat.
“As the UUP MLA for North Antrim, I am delighted to help the Public Health Agency get this vital message out to raise awareness of signs and symptoms, and encourage people to contact their GP if they experience any of them,” said Assemblyman Swann.
At least one in three people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. Being aware of signs and symptoms linked can help in early detection. This is important because the earlier a cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment. The most common types of cancer found in men were prostate, lung and bowel. In women the most common types were breast, bowel and lung.
