A Ballymoney woman suffered a fractured skull after being struck by a motorbike in Nepal where she helps homeless children.
Laura Bleakley also sustained a blood clot to the brain and possible spinal damage in the crash.
he mum-of-two moved to the country three years ago with husband, Andrew, a teacher.
She works in a children’s home as well as several voluntary projects.
A family friend said: “It’s a terrible tragedy particularly when they moved there to help people.
“Laura was due to have a scan today to see the extent of the damage and we are all just hoping and praying she will make a full recovery.”
Mrs Bleakley, from Ballymoney, was walking with Andrew when the accident happened on Tuesday.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital where four doctors worked to save her.
Her husband is maintaining a bedside vigil.
Mr Bleakley works at a school in Lalitpur, which aims to transform lives in the poverty-stricken region through education.
Before heading to Nepal, the couple attended Ballymoney Elim Church.
Its minister, Pastor Graeme Adams, told Belfast Live: “Andrew is a teacher. He teaches geography in an international school. They have been there for about three years now.
“We are waiting for updates to see what is happening.
“There has been a lot of prayer. They are well-known in the church and well-known in the wider community.
“We are focusing on prayer for Laura’s treatment and her full recovery.”
A message on the Elim Church’s website said: “We have been able to speak with Andrew who has told us that Laura is currently in hospital with a fractured skull and swelling on the brain. She is conscious but very confused and doesn’t know where she is or what has happened.
“We would ask that you join with us as we lift Laura up in prayer. Pray for complete healing, that the confusion is gone and that her skull would be completely healed in Jesus name.”
In a further statement yesterday, the church added: “We would ask that you continue to pray for Laura as the doctors are now wanting to look at her spine.
“An MRI scan will be taking place within the next hour. We pray that this scan shows that there is nothing wrong with her spine and that all injuries Laura has sustained would be healed in Jesus’ name.
“Andy has expressed his sincere thanks for all the prayers and support, it really is making a difference.”
