An independent Moyle councillor has called for a Social Security office to be opened in Ballycastle after a threat was issued to those from the town who travel to Ballymoney to collect benefits.
Cllr Padraig McShane received a stencilled letter purporting to be from the UVF which read “Ballycastle dole signers beware. Glebe UVF”.
The councillor passed the letter to the police and insisted they “act in the interests of Nationalist residents of Ballycastle”.
“Both the PSNI and the Benefits Office in Ballymoney have a duty of care regarding the safety of individuals attending for essential social services,” he said.
“It is long past the time these services were provided in Ballycastle.
“No logically compelling reason exists that prevents a part time service to exist to enhance the life chances of the residents of Ballycastle,” he added.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “We do not discuss threats or the security of any individual or group.
“No inference should be drawn from this.
“Where information is received, appropriate steps are taken to inform those concerned. We never ignore anything that would put a person at risk.”
