New safety measures for '˜dangerous' rural junction

Cathal McLaughlin believes road safety measures which are to be taken at the Galdanagh Road/Tullaghans Road Junction could help save lives.

The Sinn Fein councillor said: “I have been contacted by many residents concerned about the safety of the Galdanagh Road/Tullaghans Road Junction which has been a dangerous spot for road users for many years.

“Sight lines at the junction are non-existent and vehicles exiting the Galdanagh Road onto the Tullaghans Road are going on to a fast stretch close to hill where it is almost impossible to see if there are oncoming vehicles.”

“I have since been informed that this junction is on the minor works programme to have sight lines improved but due to current budgetary constraints it is unknown when this work will take place.

“However, in the meantime I have received assurances that warning signs will be put in place to alert road users on the Tullaghans Road to the junction ahead and indeed warning signs stating ‘slow’ will also be painted on the road.

“I welcome this action by Transport NI but will continue to lobby for the minor works scheme at this location to be completed as soon as funding becomes available.”
