Doctor to consult with accused man

A doctor is to consult with a Coleraine man facing charges after a specialist armed police unit laid siege to his house in August.

Mark Shawn Kelly, (43), of Knockantern Grove in the Mountsandel area of the town, appeared via video link from prison where is on remand in relation to charges he faces. He faces five charges including two of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause another person to believe violence would be used against them; possessing an offensive weapon, a knife, with intent to commit the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm; assaulting a police officer and resisting another officer on August 16.

A prosecutor has told Coleraine Magistrates Court they are waiting on forensics, photographs and statements which are due in November. District Judge Liam McNally asked about a fitness to plead issue which had been raised at a previous hearing. A defence lawyer said a doctor will consult with the accused and a report will follow. The case has been adjourned to November 14. On August 16, police including the PSNI’s specialist armed response unit, were camped outside Kelly’s house for several hours and the road was sealed off.
