Natural gas coming West
MID Ulster DUP Assembly MLA, Ian McCrea, has welcomed the announcement by DETI Minister Arlene Foster MLA after been given full Executive support to see an extension of natural gas networks to include towns such as Cookstown and Magherafelt in the west of Northern Ireland.
Speaking about the news Mr McCrea said: “Since coming into office in 2007 I have consistently highlighted the need for gas to be made available to customers and businesses in my constituency and I am delighted that my lobbying has not fallen on deaf ears with the DETI Minister Arlene Foster MLA who has kept it on the agenda.
“Executive Ministers have given their support, backed with a financial contribution of £32.5 million which will see the extension of natural gas provision to main towns in the west including Cookstown, Magherafelt, Dungannon, Coalisland, Omagh, Strabane and Enniskillen.
“Whilst this news will be especially welcome for businesses who face very high energy costs and need a more competitive market, it more importantly is great news for domestic homes many of which are finding it extremely difficult to pay for oil to heat their homes.
“This type of infrastructure will benefit both business and over 60,000 homes in the west alike by reducing energy costs and it is something that I will work very hard to ensure that Mid Ulster will benefit from.”
