Have your say

AT the April meeting of Armoy WI the members were thoroughly entertained by Valerie Bray who as a lecturer in the Performing Arts at the Northern Regional College was well qualified to perform monologues from the works of the late Joyce Grenfell.

This lady of comedy was a very rare phenomenom in the 1950’s and as well as her appearances in the 3 St Trinian films she performed many hilarious monologues.

Joyce got her first material for a monolgue after attending a WI meeting where the topic was’How to make useful and acceptable gifts’ and she performed her first monologue in 1939 as an after dinner speech doing a take of that WI speaker called ‘Useful and acceptable gifts’. Valerie with the aid of a very few props such as a hat, scarf or cardigan performed six of these monologues. Paddy Loughridge and Myrtle Calderwood were present for the evening to judge the large array of competition entries for the Area meeting at Toberdoney on the 16th April. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were;-
