A large turnout of Causeway University of the Third Age (U3A) members and their guests gathered in Portstewart Golf Club last Thursday October 2 for their monthly meeting.

U3A chairman Jerry Sayers welcomed all those present and up-dated members on forthcoming events before introducing the guest speaker, veteran journalist and author Alf McCreary. Mr McCreary is currently religion correspondent with the Belfast Telegraph.

Mr McCreary had reported extensively on the troubles and he made particular mention of the Kingsmills Massacre, the killing of Lord Mountbatten and the Enniskillen bombing. Following that atrocity he formed a close friendship with the late Gordon Wilson whose daughter Marie was killed.

In addition Alf has written around 30 books and interviewed many distinguished people for BBC Radio Ulster.

Causeway U3A’s next monthly is scheduled for Thursday, November 6 when Father Austin McGirr is to give a talk on orchid growing.

In addition to the regular monthly meetings, the U3A have an enormous range of educational, social and recreational activities for members to enjoy on a weekly basis. Anyone interested in joining can find more information on Causeway U3A’s website which can be found at causewayu3a.co.uk
