Last week Gaelscoil an Chaistil welcomed a special guest to their school who met the staff and pupils and talked about a new and exciting programme the school is part of.

Sustrans is a sustainable transport charity that encourages people to choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment.

Emma Keenan is the Sustrans Active Travel Officer for the Causeway Coast & Glens and will be working with Gaelscoil an Chaistil for the next two years, promoting cycling and walking on the school journey.

Emma said: “Encouraging and enabling kids to cycle or walk on their journey to school is such a great way to promote an active lifestyle.

“I’m excited to be working with Gaelscoil an Chaistil; both pupils and staff are enthusiastic and excited about being part of the Active Travel programme.

“As children, parents and staff experience the benefits of active travel in a safe and fun way, we expect to see the number of children walking, cycling and scooting to school to increase through the year.”

The school’s principal Brídín Ní Dhonnghaile added, “ Gaelscoil an Chaistil are extremely excited to have Emma working with us. The children have already begun to discuss the different ways they can be actively travelling to and from school.”
