BALLYCASTLE Independent councillor Seamus Blaney says he is concerned at what some local people see as a "snub" in the build-up to this year's big Christmas Lights Switch-On in the town.
A number of local people were unhappy at the change to the format of this Thursday's (December 3) event.
They are unhappy a popular cross-community open-air Carol Service in the Diamond involving the three major churches will not coincide with the
lights switch on.
Councillor Blaney said he was told a different format was being used for the event this year. Councillor Blaney said councillors did not make any decision on the matter and he would be making representations to the Council staff who made the decision.
"Community relations between the churches have never been better in Ballycastle and a number of people see this as a snub to the churches," he said.
Meanwhile, a Ballycastle resident said: "For years Ballycastle have held an "open-air" carol service in the Diamond, Ballycastle which coincided with the switching on of the Christmas tree lights. This was an opportunity for the three clergy - representing the Church of Ireland, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian churches to be seen together in the centre of the town and hosting the carol service, with real cross community participation.
"If the weather was not favourable the carol service moved inside, with the kind permission of Rev. David Palmer to Holy Trinity Church. This year the local clergy were not invited to be a part of the switching on of the Christmas tree lights in Ballycastle.
"Personally I feel this is such a step backwards for Ballycastle and I just wonder what prompted this decision from a Council which prides itself in being to the fore in building 'cross community' bridges? Again another way in which Christians are being discriminated against."
Moyle Council Good Relations Officer Ryan Moore is involved in organising the Christmas Lights Switch-On.
He told the Times: "We try to organise the Switch-On with different formats to make it as enjoyable for as many people as possible.
"Every year we have an uneasy balance between the traditional religious element and the more commercial element of it.
"Every year we get various feedback from those saying it is not religious enough or those who say they want it to be more commercial so we try to tweak it every year."
Mr Moore said this year Ballycastle Chamber of Commerce was involved in the event and is working closely with Moyle Gateway Club.
He said there will be a DJ playing Christmas Carols and commercial Christmas music and Olivia Nash - between known as 'Ma' from 'Give My Head Peace' - will perform the lights switch-on.
The Gateway Club will have a Santa's Grotto beside the Christmas Tree.
Added Mr Moore: "More of the commercial side was developing and I felt to blend a Carol Service into that format was not going to be a healthy mix."
Regarding the controversy which is brewing in Ballycastle, Mr Moore added: "I appreciate some people will not be enamoured but it is not a snub to anyone. The churches can still organise Carol Services and everyone is welcome to the Christmas Lights Switch-On".
He said it was not the first year a Carol Service has not been held at the time of the Christmas Lights Switch-On, saying that was the case in 2006.
Mr Moore said it was now too late to try to rejig the event to fit in the Carol Service this year but he said if people want a Carol Service at the event it could be examined for next year.
