ENVIRONMENTAL Youth speak is an annual public speaking competition, organised to stimulate environmental awareness among local young people by giving them the opportunity to research and speak their mind on topical environmental issues.
This year’s topic was ‘How reducing my waste will benefit the polar bear’. District Councils are divided into 3 regional Waste Management Groups, North West (North West Region Waste Management, ARC21 (Eastern Region) and SWaMP (Southern Waste Manage
ment Partnership).

This competition is a good mechanism for generating local interest in environmental issues. It allows the Council to engage with schools and encourage our young people to become more aware of what they can do to minimise their impact on the environment”.

Thanks to all the children who took park and congratulations to Sarah Glass from Ballycastle Integrated Primary School who won the junior competition. She will now go on to represent the Moyle District Council area at the regional final, which will take place on 15th May in the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh. Thanks also go to our two judges, Councillor Madeline Black and Ms Elizabeth Steele who had a difficult task picking a winner.

The Grand Final will draw the best juniors together in a Northern Ireland wide competition sponsored by the Environment and Heritage Service. Very best wishes are extended to Sarah as she prepares for the regional finals.
