STREET buskers wishing to be considered for a street entertainers competition during the Lammas Fair will have to assemble at Ballycastle seafront for two hours on the Monday rather than being judged whilst dotted around the streets.
Moyle Council agreed to the move but there was some opposition.
Sinn Fein councillor Cathal Newcombe said the buskers should not be "confined" but should be spread out around the Fair.
However, Council official Esther Mulholland said the numbers
of entertainers they are attracting is falling and in a bid to compete with bigger busking competitions larger prices will be offered if buskers gather at the seafront which Fair organisers want to transform into a family area.
The issue of congestion arising from crowds gathering around buskers on the streets was also raised.
In a report to councillors, Ms Mulholland said: "In an attempt to develop the Street Entertainers Competition at the Lammas Fair the following is suggested:
"* Difficulties were encountered in the last few years with the Street Entertainers being heard when they are placed throughout the town of Ballycastle during the two days of the Lammas Fair.
"Also in certain places their performances cause congestion. In light of this the entertainers will be asked this year to place themselves at the seafront.
"* It is also proposed that the competition is restricted to the Monday of the Lammas Fair from 2pm-4pm. This will have the effect of doubling the prize money and therefore it has the potential to attract more competitors and possibly encourage a higher standard."
Council Chairperson, Cllr Madeline Black (SDLP), agreed with the changes.
She said very few people entered the competition last year and said it would be better having the buskers all together at the seafront.
Cllr Newcombe said the competition was originally started to bring buskers to the Fair and it wasn't about quality.
Cllr Black said there were perhaps only eight people in the competition last year and she said it could take maybe two hours for judges to make their way through the town.
Independent councillor Randal McDonnell - known for his off-the-cuff remarks - said the buskers should be sent to Rathlin.
