WHEN it comes to raising money for charity, most people will grit their teeth and cheerfully negotiate the pain barrier.
Take the case of Dervock man, Jack Walker, who, on Saturday night, was forced to grin and bear it when he agreed to have his legs waxed in the hallowed surroundings of the Elim Church hall in Ballymoney.

Jack, along with Glenn Gilmore and Pastor Roy Johnston, hardly flinched when Michelle Davidson applied the dreaded cloths to the designated areas to raise money for a forthcoming trip to South Africa.

In tandem with the leg wax, members of the Church enjoyed a barbecue the proceeds of which will fund Jack and colleagues to Petersburg where they will team up with the Emmanuel Assemblies in a structured programme aimed at helping the under privileged.

The trip takes place in the first week in August and is for 14 days.
Organised through the Elim Missions, the four will work with young people in schools and youth groups helping out where they can.
Precise details are not yet to hand but the four will be fully briefed when they get to their destination.

But already they cannot wait for the trip to happen and are eagerly engaged in a number of fund-raising exercises at present.
A games night held recently in Dervock raised £400 and a bed push is due to take place in Lisburn and Belfast to raise further monies.
Anything surplus after expenses have been paid will go to a good cause in South Africa.

"We are looking forward to doing something positive in Petersburg, but we know that the trip would not have been possible without the help of many people locally.

"We are grateful to everyone who has contributed via sponsorship and in other ways and we hope they accept that all their contributions are for a very good cause," Jack told the Times.
