A SINN Fein councillor has called for a 20mph speed limit - currently being tested at Kilmoyle School near Ballybogey - to be rolled out to other schools in north Antrim like Garryduff Primary School and Carrowreagh Primary School.
Anita Cavlan was speaking at a meeting of Ballymoney Borough Council attended by Roads Service officials.

Regarding Carrowreagh in particular, Councillor Cavlan said the speed limit at the school is 60mph but in practice cars go even faster, even
at times when children are going in and out of the school.
She said she has raised the speeding matters with the PSNI and on occasions they have deployed speed detection equipment.

Roads Service official Malcolm Glover said the Kilmoyle School initiative is a pilot scheme and no decision will be taken on rolling it out until the initial results are evaluated.
Meanwhile, at the same meeting Councillor Cavlan said she wished to thank Roads Service for work on flashing warning lights at Bushvalley Primary School at Stranocum.

However, DUP councillor Frank Campbell - a member of the Board of Governors at the school - said a number of people didn't believe there was a problem with speeding past the school.
He said he was happy to see the introduction of the flashing lights "but how it arose I have no idea".

Councillor Cavlan has spoken regularly about her involvement in campaigning for the lights at the school which is an area where a well known loyalist spokesman said last week she is unwelcome.
Alderman Campbell said he was told there was actually a bigger problem at the school with slow speed at the school because tractors pass the school and children are attracted to windows to look at them.
Councillor Cavlan said she was contacted by parents and grandparents who have pupils at the school who were worried about speeding vehicles going past the school and in Stranocum in general.

The Sinn Fein councillor said she visited the area herself and noticed speeding vehicles.

She said she had spoken to the PSNI and said they told her they have had reports of speeding in the area.
