A GOAT called 'Billy' because it is due to be transported across the border during the 12th holidays ahead of the famous Puck Fair in County Kerry is currently being kept at a 'secret' location in north Antrim.
The goat is being tended to by Ballycastle Independent councillor Seamus Blaney in the run-up to transportation to Killorglin on July 14 where weeks later it will be crowned 'King Puck'.
It is quite an honour for a north Antrim goat as the title is usually conferred to a wild goat caught in the wilds of the Kerry mountains.
Annually a goat is made 'King' of Killorglin for the three days of the annual festival each August with various theories as to how the tradition came to be.
However, this year to mark the 30th anniversary of the 'Three Fairs Committee' - a link-up between the Puck Fair, Ballinasloe and Ballycastle's Lammas Fair - a north Antrim goat will be named 'King Puck'.
Seamus revealed to the Times he and a team of helpers caught the wild goat in County Antrim and it is now at an undisclosed location being well fed and watered ahead of its big outing across the border.
He would not reveal its precise location in case pranksters try to release 'Billy' ahead of his big outing in front of tens of thousands at the Puck Fair in August.
Added Seamus: "When the Three Fairs Committtee was formed goats were exchanged between Killorglin and Ballycastle and the one which was flown from Farranfore airport in Kerry to the north was released around Fair Head.
"Now we have our own wild goat and because I will take it down to Kerry on July 14 ahead of a Three Fairs Committee meeting on July 16 we decided to call it 'Billy' as it is the Twelfth week - you could say it is a Billy goat.
"I intend to put it in a trailer and tow it down behind my car. There was some talk that an airline was going to step in but that doesn't appear to be going ahead.
"The plan is to keep the goat in Killorglin until the Fair in August when it will be crowned 'King Puck'," said Seamus.
