Ballycastle and District Tractor Ploughing Society held their 70th Ploughing Match on New Year’s Day 1st January 2015 on lands kindly granted by Mr & Mrs David and Barbara McMullan at Limepark, Armoy – the site on which the World Ploughing Championships were held in 1959.

A spokesperson explained: “We were honoured to have Lawrence McMillan the World Champion at this event in attendance along with five other Northern Ireland ploughmen who have claimed this prestigious title over the years.

“Heavy rain was forecasted for New Year’s Day but the rain held off very well leaving good ground conditions for the event, the excellent land was ideal for ploughing. Even with the rain on the days leading up to the match, spectator’s cars were able to park in the field. We extend our thanks to Armoy Rugby Club, who allowed us to use their car park for our ploughmen to park their lorries.

“Many thanks to the ladies who provided the hot food to the ploughmen and spectators, it was much appreciated on a cold day. We would also like to thank all the friends and spectators who kindly gave donations to our chosen charity ‘Friends of the Caner Centre’.

“It was great to see a large turnout of over 40 competitors at our 70th anniversary match. We are also indebted to the sponsors for their generosity to the Society without such financial help, it would not be possible to run a ploughing match.

“To the judges Messrs L McMillan, W King, Des Wright, D Wallace, G Murphy, H Simms, W Hood, T McCracken, J Sloan, R Sloan and D Percy we extend a special word of thanks for giving of their time and expertise to help us out on the day. We now have a very small committee but they deserve a lot of thanks for preparing the site and conducting the match so efficiently, also thanks to the spectators who came to watch we were delighted to see you and hope you enjoyed your day.”
