Welcome return of Chris Newman and Máire Ní Chathasaigh

Ballymoney Borough Arts Committee’s new winter programme opens on Wednesday 6 February with the welcome return of Chris Newman and Máire Ní Chathasaigh, one of the most popular duos to have performed in the Town Hall.

Máire is ‘the doyenne of Irish harpers’ and recipient of Irish music’s most prestigious award, Traditional Musician of the Year. Chris is ‘one of the UK’s most staggering and influential acoustic guitarists’ (fROOTS), whose new solo album Still Getting Away With It has received rave reviews - ‘An astonishing, joy-filled romp... a must-buy for any guitar player’ (Scotland on Sunday).

Their performances worldwide are rooted but eclectic, emotional but adventurous: a breathtaking blend of traditional Irish dance music, hot jazz, bluegrass and baroque, coupled with evocative airs, striking new compositions - and Chris’s delightfully subversive wit!

‘Brilliant, innovative harping and guitar-playing of astonishing virtuosity and versatility’.

‘An eclecticism and spirit of adventure that is quite thrilling... Virtuoso playing... bewitching string fantasies and a wonderfully clear and expressive voice’. The Times

“When it comes to virtuoso work on this ancient and delicate instrument, the Irish player Máire Ní Chathasaigh is in a class of her own…” Robin Deneslow, The Guardian.

The performance takes place at 8pm in Ballymoney Town Hall. Tickets £9, concessions £7 are available from the Town Hall 028 2766 0230. Further information on the duo can be found at www.oldbridgemusic.com
