Retired Teachers’ Association hold AGM

The AGM of the North East Branch of the Retired Teachers’ Association took place in Portstewart Golf Club on Thursday 20 September.

The branch has 259 members drawn from all parts of North Antrim and East Londonderry. Mrs Moira Gribbon (chairman,) welcoming all present, gave a short account of the events organised by the committee: the annual lunch which was greatly enjoyed by the members and the spring outing to The Argory at Moy near Dungannon.

She welcomed Mr Frank Rodgers the guest speaker whose reputation as a great provider of entertainment had gone before him and the members were looking forward to seeing and hearing what he produced. Mrs Gribbon then called on Mrs Lucy Alcorn to give the secretary’s report and Mrs Moyra Martin that of the treasurer.

Mr Cecil Leitch then rose to conduct the election of officers for the incoming year. The new chairman was Mrs Dorothy Lynn, Vice Chairman Mrs Anne Campbell, Mrs Martin continued as treasurer while secretarial duties would, on a temporary basis, be shared by four people, Mrs Alcorn, Miss Elizabeth Smyth, Mrs Lynn and Mrs Gribbon, Mrs Dorothy Mclmoyle continued as representative on the Central Executive and Mr Andy McFetridge continued as auditor. The committee consists of Mrs Mary Fall, Mrs Moira Gribbon, Mr James Nesbitt and Mr Ronnie Strong.

After all the business affairs of the afternoon were complete Mr Frank Rodgers from Ballycastle gave a most enjoyable Musical Tour of Ireland. As various singers, one of whom was Daniel O’Donnell, sang such melodies as Danny Boy, The Ould Lammass Fair, The Rose of Tralee and The Boys from the County Armagh Mr Rodgers gave a background to the song while stunning pictures of the places concerned were shown on a screen.

Everyone sang along. This was followed by a delicious afternoon tea, enjoyed by all. Mrs Gribbon then thanked Mr Rodgers and presented him with a token of the Branch’s appreciation.
