Icy dip raises £1,650 for Marie Curie

While many people were nursing their hangovers on New Year’s Day, others were starting 2013 off on a very charitable footing, as 43 people braved the freezing waters off the Antrim Coast, running into the tide at Cushendun in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The sun was shining and water was cold as a great turnout gathered in Cushendun, with some stripping off to take to the waters and others staying wrapped up to cheer on the ‘swimmers’ from the warmth of the beach – it was clear to see there was a great buzz about.

Briege Hamilton who organised the event told us.

“I couldn’t have asked for more, the event was organised to remember those from our local community who have been lost to cancer, to celebrate the survivors and to raise money for Marie Curie.

“We had a great turn out today, the atmosphere was brilliant and so far £2,500 has been raised – so thank you to everyone who came along and made it a great success, especially Cushendun GAC for the use of their facilities and the great turn out from the team and also to those who helped with the ‘warm up’ afterwards. Lets hope next year is bigger and better!”
