Charity hopes for return of thousands of Trocaire boxes

Trocaire is appealing for the public in Co. Antrim to return their Trocaire boxes this weekend (21st/22nd April) so that the donations can help secure a government funding boost.

The charity has thanked the public for supporting its campaign and says that this support will be crucial in making sure the government funds are made available to help the charity continue it’s work in some of the world’s poorest countries.

This year’s Trocaire Lenten campaign highlighted the efforts of people from northern Uganda in rebuilding their communities after a twenty year war. Three hundred people from Daniel Okweng’s community were massacred by rebels from Joseph Kony’s Lords Resistance Army. Trocaire, with donations from the public here at home, is helping people rebuild their lives and farms by providing agricultural training, livestock and seeds, building water sources, setting up savings and loans schemes and supporting trauma counselling.

“Parishes across Co. Antrim will gladly accept returned Trocaire boxes this weekend,” said Ms. McNulty. “Anyone who has a Trocaire box at home or in work can kindly drop it back to their local parish and we can start putting these generous donations into action.”

People can also donate online at www.trocaire.org/lent or by calling 0800 912 1200. Trocaire is also running a national competition for primary schools to design next year’s 2013 Trocaire box for its 40th anniversary. The closing date is 27th April 2012.
