THROUGH the centuries, from these shores, words like courage, tradition, and determination were synonymous with people such as the Duke of Wellington, Montgomery, Blair Mayne, abd Tim Collins.
Those words can also be used to accurately describe the actions of two local women who have volunteerd to do a tandem parachute jump (13,000ft) to raise funds for both the Royal British Legion and Help the Heroes.

Yvonne Quigg (nee McLernon) from
Dervock said: “When I was growing up listening to stories that involved my father parachuting into conflict situations around the world it scared yet intrigued me.

“I used to close my eyes and try to visualise what it must be like; the sensation must be exhilarating. I can't wait".

However Ruth Black (nee McLernon) held a more pragmatic position.

"This will provide the opportunity to raise both the profile of the Poppy Appeal and the work of the Royal British Legion,” she said.

“Our families have a long tradition of providing service to the community Alexander (Sandy) McLernon 2nd Para - UDR and Major W McLernon - Queens Royal Irish Hussar.

“It will be a poignant day for both of us, but weather permitting, we will do what is required.

"Theres still time to make a donation so please support such a worthy cause.”

The tandem parachute jump is this Saturday 27 June 2009.
